Does Red Light Therapy Work for Hair Loss?
What the published trials actually measured, who it helped, and who it didn't.

Short answer: in several published trials, people using red light on the scalp grew more hair than people using a fake device that looked identical. That’s a real, repeated finding, not a single study. It works best on hair that’s thinning, not on scalp that’s been bald for years, and results build over months, not days.
Below is what the actual trials measured, not the marketing summary of them. Worth reading if you’re about to spend money on this.
The trials, one at a time
The earliest and most cited work here comes from Roland Lanzafame’s team, who ran two separate randomised, sham-controlled trials, one in men and one in women, using a helmet combining low-level lasers and LEDs at 655 nm.

Both trials used the device every other day. Sham-controlled means half the participants wore an identical helmet that didn’t actually emit therapeutic light, and neither the participants nor the people counting hairs knew who had which one until the data was unblinded. That design matters, because hair counting is subjective enough that a badly designed study can find whatever it wants to find.
A separate, larger trial from Jimenez and colleagues tested a handheld laser comb on 269 men and women over 26 weeks, three sessions a week.

A 2019 multicentre trial out of Thailand, using a full helmet rather than a handheld comb, found an even larger jump: 41.9 more hairs per cm² after 16 weeks. Different device, different population, same direction.
Then in 2021, a review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology pooled the results of multiple FDA-cleared home devices. Its conclusion was blunt: the devices produced a statistically significant increase in hair density compared to sham, across studies.
Who it actually helps
Every trial above enrolled people with early to moderate pattern hair loss, meaning follicles that were shrinking but still alive. None of them enrolled people who’d been fully bald in an area for years. That distinction isn’t a marketing caveat. It’s the whole mechanism: red light is thought to support mitochondrial activity in cells that are still producing hair, encouraging them to stay in the growth phase for longer. It has nothing to work with in a follicle that’s already gone.
So in practice:
- Widening part, more hair in the shower drain, a hairline that’s just started to move back — this is the population the trials studied, and where results are most likely.
- Visible scalp under bright light, thinner strands but not fully smooth skin — still within range, based on the same trials.
- Skin that’s been completely bald for several years — outside what any of these trials tested, and outside what the proposed mechanism can do.
What none of this proves
None of these studies were run on Theracap specifically. They were run on other red light and laser devices, mostly helmets and combs, at wavelengths in the same general range Theracap uses. That’s a meaningful distinction, not a technicality. A wellness brand citing research on the category isn’t the same as a brand with its own clinical trial, and we don’t have one.
It’s also worth being clear about what “FDA-cleared” means for these devices, because it gets thrown around loosely. Red light hair devices sit in a specific FDA product category (OAP) that requires 510(k) clearance to be marketed for hair growth. Clearance means a manufacturer showed a device is substantially similar to one already on the market, not that the FDA independently proved it works. Theracap has not sought or received this clearance, which is exactly why we don’t use FDA language anywhere on this site.
The honest timeline
Hair grows in cycles that last months, so nothing here works fast. Based on the trials above, most people who see a change notice reduced shedding somewhere around month two or three, and a visible increase in density, if it’s going to happen, between months four and six. That’s also roughly how long the trials themselves ran before measuring anything.
If you want to actually test this properly on yourself: take a photo in the same light, same distance, same hairstyle, before you start, and check back at three and six months. Memory is a bad judge of gradual change. Photos aren’t.
